Is full excess insurance worth it for a Dubai car rental?

If you'd struggle to absorb an unexpected AED 1,500โ€“5,000 charge, yes. Full-excess (zero-excess/SCDW-style) cover reduces your damage liability to zero or near zero for covered incidents, and often comes with a smaller deposit hold at the desk. Small scratches and dings are the most common charges in Dubai rentals, so many renters find it pays for itself.

What it adds over standard CDW

Standard CDW already caps your liability at the excess โ€” full-excess products take that remaining excess down to zero or near zero. A car-park scratch that would otherwise cost you your full excess becomes a non-event: report it, hand back the keys, walk away.

The cost-versus-risk maths

Weigh the daily price of the cover against the excess you'd otherwise be exposed to. Minor cosmetic damage is the single most common charge on Dubai rentals โ€” tight parking, sand-blasted paintwork, valet mishaps โ€” so the odds of a small claim are higher than most renters assume. A useful bonus: with full cover in place, desks often place a smaller deposit hold on your card.

What it still won't cover

  • Reckless or unlawful driving, including alcohol
  • Unauthorised drivers not named on the agreement
  • Prohibited use such as off-road driving

Buy it at booking, not at the desk

The same protection sold at the pickup counter is usually priced higher than when added at booking time. Add the cover while you compare rental cars on our site, check what's included in the rate's conditions, and see car rental help for how the excess and deposit interact.
