How much is the security deposit for a rental car in Dubai?

For standard cars the security deposit is typically an AED 1,000–3,500 hold on the main driver's credit card, taken at the rental desk when you collect the car. Larger, premium and luxury cars carry higher holds. It is a temporary authorisation, not a charge — and the exact amount for your car is shown in the rental conditions before you confirm.

Typical ranges by car class

  • Economy and compact: usually AED 1,000–1,500.
  • SUVs and family cars: around AED 1,500–2,500.
  • Premium saloons and large SUVs: AED 2,500–3,500 or more.

Supercars and luxury rentals play by different rules entirely — deposits run far higher there, which we cover in luxury & experiences help.

A hold, not a payment

The desk blocks the amount on your credit card; no money actually leaves your account. The catch is that the hold reduces your available credit for the length of the rental, so make sure your limit has room for the deposit on top of your holiday spending.

Where to see your exact figure

The precise deposit is stated in the rental conditions during booking on our partner's secure engine, and again on your voucher. If you decline excess-reduction cover at the desk, expect the hold to sit at the higher end — the deposit mirrors the insurance excess you are liable for.

Getting it back

After you return the car undamaged and fuelled as agreed, the hold is released. Banks then take days to weeks to show it — Dubai desks commonly quote up to 30 days to cover late Salik tolls and fines. Compare rental cars with deposits shown up front, or browse more answers in car rental help.
