Dubai Mall, at the foot of the Burj Khalifa, is one of the most visited buildings on the planet — and treating it as "a mall" undersells it. Developed by Emaar and still expanding, it is closer to an indoor district: over a thousand stores, yes, but also a full-scale aquarium, an Olympic-size ice rink, a 155-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton and a waterfront promenade onto the Dubai Fountain lake.
Beyond the shops
The Dubai Aquarium's ten-million-litre tank dominates the ground floor — you can see the viewing panel free from the concourse, or buy tickets for the tunnel and the underwater zoo above it. KidZania keeps children occupied for hours, the ice rink hosts public sessions daily, and the Reel multiplex is one of the largest cinemas in the region. Fashion Avenue holds the luxury flagships if that is your speed; the souk-styled wing balances it with gold and Arabian goods.
Practical tips
The mall is vast — plan around one anchor (aquarium, fountain dinner, a shopping list) rather than trying to "see" it. Evenings bring the fountain shows on the lake outside; the waterfront restaurants are the best seats. Parking is huge and free for most stays, with the mall sitting directly off Sheikh Zayed and Financial Centre Roads; by Metro, allow a genuine 15-minute walk from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station via the air-conditioned link.
