Sheikh Zayed Road is Dubai's spine. Officially the E11, it runs parallel to the coast from the Trade Centre roundabout all the way to the Abu Dhabi border, carrying more than a dozen lanes between two walls of skyscrapers — Emirates Towers, the Museum of the Future, the DIFC cluster — before threading past Downtown, Mall of the Emirates, the Marina and Jebel Ali. Once called Defence Road, it was renamed in honour of Sheikh Zayed, the UAE's founding president, and almost everything a visitor wants sits on or just off it.
Driving it
The road is modern, well signed in English and Arabic, and far less frightening than its lane count suggests — but it rewards preparation. Know your exit before you need it and keep right in good time; missing one can mean several kilometres to the next U-turn. Speed limits are strictly camera-enforced. Salik toll gates along the route charge your rental automatically, and the Metro red line runs alongside almost the whole way if you ever want to park and ride.
Why it matters for your trip
Almost every drive you take in Dubai — airport to Marina, Downtown to the Palm, day trip to Abu Dhabi — uses Sheikh Zayed Road, so getting comfortable on it on day one pays off for the whole stay. Drive it once at night, when both walls of towers are lit, purely for the spectacle: it is one of the great urban drives anywhere.
